Introductions: Samsung A30 features. The new Samsung Galaxy A series has proven to be a great lineup of offerings starting with the budget A10 and going up to the upper-midrange A80. We’ve already reviewed a bunch of these, but we’re still going – there’s still a lot more to come.
And today, it’s the Galaxy A30’s turn – an exciting mix of the A40’s internals and the A50’s display. Samsung A30 camera
The Samsung Galaxy A30 has two snappers on the back – the primary 16MP PDAF f/1.7 snapper is paired with a 5MP fixed-focus, f/2.2 ultra-wide, and is flanked by a single LED flash. There’s no depth camera on the A30, but it can take portrait photos with a perfect background – a live focus mode, as Samsung, calls it.
So, the primary camera has a 16MP resolution sensor behind a sharp f/1.7 lens with a focal length of 26mm. Then there’s the 5MP sensor behind the f/2.2 aperture lens that provides a 120-degree field of view. The EXIF data reports a 13mm focal length.
The camera app is the same as any existing Samsung, just with more icons in the viewfinder to control which camera is being used. A 3-tree icon means an ultra-wide-angle cam, while 2 trees indicate a regular camera.
Essential operation is business, with sideswipes to cycle through modes and an up/down action to toggle between rear and front cameras. An AI-powered Scene Optimizer mode recognizes certain scenes and adjusts parameters accordingly. We left it out because it doesn’t matter, and we prefer to add effects later. The displayed methods and their order can be changed in the settings.
During the day, this tiny camera produces pleasant images, which may not be full of detail, but their field of view is vast. Colors are much more popping than what we experienced on regular 16MP stills, but Samsung could have improved that to produce vivid images and enough distraction from inferior quality. And indeed, it does.
The ultra-wide-angle camera relies on a 5MP sensor with a fixed focus. Lens correction is not available, so expect distorted buildings.16MP selfies are soft and average in detail, but they offer excellent contrast and punchy colors. Auto HDR fires more often here, but it does a great job restoring clipped highlights. You can get some good shots with the proper distance and enough light.
Portrait mode is also available on the selfie camera, with only one camera. Portraits are softer than regular selfies, while edge detection is worse than the primary camera. Attempts to hide defects and artifacts with additional opacity; however, most fail. Auto HDR comes into play here when needed and works very well.
Conclusion: Samsung A30 features
Handling the Galaxy A30 is business as usual. The phone feels more glass than plastic, which is nice, but it’s easy to smudge and eventually get dirty. It’s not as slippery as it looks, and even if the profile is thin and not that rugged, we didn’t have any significant problems handling it.
And like everyone else, Samsung has its way of implementing Google’s new gesture-based navigation. These work as traditional buttons – swiping from the bottom left brings up the recent apps menu by default, and stealing from the bottom right takes you back one step.
You can change them in the settings menu, but the home button remains a single swipe from the bottom center. If you swipe and hold, it will invoke Google Assistant.
